Semaglutide is a member of a class of drugs that have been used for diabetes management for over a decade - GLP1-RAs (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists).
In terms of weight loss, Semaglutide increases the sensation of “fullness” and decreases appetite and cravings by delaying gastric emptying. This results in a decreased caloric intake and shedding of pounds.
In terms of science, Semaglutide is a GLP-1 hormone that acts on your brain to regulate hunger and food intake. It works by increasing insulin release, lowering the amount of glucagon released which delays gastric emptying and reducing appetite.

Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are injected once a week with a very small needle subcutaneously. It may be injected into the skin on your stomach, thigh, or back of upper arm. Injection sites should be rotated each week. Your provider will provide education on how to inject prior to starting therapy during one of your visits.
Most common side effects are: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, fatigue, upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, gas, and heartburn. Many of these symptoms decrease or resolve over time as your body acclimates to the medication.
Most side affects are manageable by slow dosing and specific titration schedule ordered by your provider.
Note some people do not experience side effects at all.
The current failure rate of people stopping or quitting medication due to side effects is approximately 3%.
